What was your athletic background, if any?
I have played competitive soccer throughout my whole life and then I played basketball in my offseason. My senior year of high school I did powerlifting because I really enjoyed lifting and wanted to get stronger for soccer!
What led you to Crossfit and CFA specifically?
I originally started CrossFit in high school to stay conditioned for soccer and then started doing it regularly. I came to CFA when I moved here to go to GVSU. It was the first gym I looked at and knew that was the gym I wanted to go to! It felt really welcoming and I loved how open it was!
What do you do when you’re not at CFA?
My life is (was) pretty consumed with school and work, but I really love going for walks with friends, kicking around a soccer ball every so often, and watching THE food network! 🙂
When did you realize that CrossFit is right for you?
I realized it was my jam when I started becoming a happier, more positive person as a whole. Setting aside all the physical improvements, it really brightens my day to get a great workout in with people I enjoy being around. I also love the variety of movements and challenges.
Do you remember your first WOD?
Yikes. Somewhat yes. All I remember is it was the hottest day of the summer (92 degrees) and we had to do a 500m row and burpees for LOTS of rounds. I vividly remember the rowers facing the sun, so you could feel it beating on you. I almost yaked.
What movement do you despise over everything and why?
Overhead squats. idk they just irritate me.
What has been your all-time favorite moment at CFA?
All time favorite moment was the rowling tournament/fundraiser we did this past year. It was absolutely amazing to see everyone come together, support each other, and have fun! My heart was so full that day and I couldn’t stop smiling.
What motivates you during a tough workout?
My grandpa! He is my hero and unfortunately suffers from many heart issues. A long time ago he told me “you know, seeing you play soccer keeps me going. I have so many physical limitations now and it was hard for me to cope with that change, but seeing you active just gives me life and makes it a little better. whatever you do, never give up your health, okay?” I keep going for him and my overall health, short/long term.
What are your goals going forward and what do you think will help you achieve them?
I would like to get better at gymnastics cause whew…that is a rough one for me. I think keeping up/getting better on my strict movements will help and also putting in an extra 10-15 mins a day practicing those things.
What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health, and fitness or just day to day life since starting CrossFit (before/after?)
I think the biggest change has been in the mental aspect of things. I not only am able to get through tough moments better, but I have gotten to know my body better too (when to rest, how to pace, etc). Also, I had shrimp arms before all this and now they’re a little less shrimpy.
What would you recommend to someone who is just starting out with CrossFit or is too afraid to try it?
I know it is intimidating at first, but try it out. You cannot know if you like something if you don’t try it. Try it out, because it has the potential to change your life if you let it.
If you could have one skill or characteristic of another member at CFA what and from whom would it be? Or which other CFA member are you the most motivated by?
Deb Steele! When she began chemotherapy I would still see her in OG working out and getting movement in. Every time I see her I am just so inspired because she is such a strong woman and wow, I just don’t have words for how great she is. (I also loved seeing her progress on jump ropes)

Coach’s comment:
Maggie is past due for member of the month. She has been a great addition to our gym these past few years. Not only is she a joy to be around but she also puts her all into every single workout. She shows up ready to work hard every day. She has officially graduated from grand valley and will be starting a new chapter in her life soon so we wanted to make sure she knows that she is a valued member of CFA!
