What do you do when you’re not at CFA?
I work, I travel, I sail, I band — not necessarily in that order.
What do you do for a living?
My “day job” is in management in public mental health. I founded and run Key2Happiness Counseling and see clients evenings and weekends.
How has your fitness changed since joining?
I view fitness differently as I age. I feel like my strength may have plateaued but my fitness is there. The fact that we change it up all of the time – I like to think my fitness is well rounded. It isn’t something I do anymore — it’s just part of who I am. CFA has helped me stave off a knee replacement that’s looming — and I’m counting on it to help me bounce back when that day comes.
When did you realize that CrossFit was right for you?
It was a quick thing for me. I realized I need the peer pressure to push myself. Back in the day there were 3 of us, regularly. It’s grown into at least 15 and usually more – clearly it’s contagious and THE place to be at 510am.

What movement do you despise over everything and why?
Despise has different meanings for me now. I don’t run. I have always despised running – so when my Orthopedic surgeon told me not to… DONE. Turkish-get-ups are also despise-worthy with a crappy knee.
What has been your all-time favorite moment at CFA?
So many fun moments!
Oh my – it’s like picking a favorite child. Lol I feel like there are little moments all of the time. CFA roots my day. We have lots of laughs, some cries, and plethoras of whiny moments. Sharing our misery, our successes, our joys, our heartbreaks – it’s what makes CFA more than a gym or a class.
I do recall a workout where I think we were doing bench-presses and then had a buy-out of burpees or something like that – and I nearly broke my face on my first burpee – not realizing my pecs/arms were toasted. Pretty sure Josh was standing there (was he recording? – I don’t recall) laughing at me…

What motivates you during a tough workout?
This too shall pass and – reminding myself that I can and have before – I’m stronger than I think.
And …that it will end. Eventually. Probably. And if not, at least I’ll go down sweating.
What’s something about you that most people at the gym don’t know?
Most in boot camp know – but maybe not the rest of the gym, I’m in a band that I’ve been in for 12 years. So if I’m singing while we’re working out – carry on. I’m not losing oxygen, I’m just practicing.

If you had to describe your CrossFit experience in one word, what would it be?
Rewarding.
If you could write your own workout for a day, what would it be?
1:00 Each X5: Good Mornings – with barbell, Deadlifts – heavy, Rowing, Bench Press, Farmer or Sandbag carry (short with “rest” for remaining seconds)
What would you recommend to someone who is just starting out with CrossFit?
Do it! Just keep doing it! It WILL get easier. You will get stronger. AND only the coach is watching you. The rest of us are in our own heads trying to not faint/groan too loud/pee (iykyk)/fall in our own sweat pool- we aren’t watching you (even if it looks like we are).
It’s the best peer pressure you’ll ever pay for….
As I say in my 2nd (or is it 3rd) job – “Move the body. Move the mind.” You’ll feel accomplished after – even if that accomplishment means you have to fall onto the toilet for the next couple days.

If you could have one skill or characteristic of another member at CFA what and from whom would it be?
I would succubus the youth and energy from everyone – just a few months from everyone. You’d never know…. Until I figure out how to do that – I’ll stay inspired by those who modify and keep going for whatever reason – but especially our pregnant wonder-women who carry around another human while carrying kettlebells.
Quick Questions:
Favorite Cheat meal: Pizza!!!!!!
Favorite Workout song: Safe to say it’s definitely NOT Thunderstruck. I love our alt rock workout playlist with Paramore, Fall Out Boys, Panic at the Disco, etc.
Favorite Place You Have Traveled: Juneau, Alaska
Favorite TV Show: Criminal Minds… I’m old.
Favorite CrossFit Games Athlete: Mary Schwing – out of Oahu. Crossfit 808 said it best- “…proof that age is just a number” – trying to remember that myself.
Coaches’ Comment:
Sandi has been a long-time part of our CFA community and early morning boot camp days. From the early days of three people and silence to the upbeat atmosphere nowadays, she’s seen it all. She is a great example of consistency over time, and her fitness and ability to keep moving prove it. In your fitness journey there will be ups and downs and setbacks, but the best thing you can do is keep moving and keep a good attitude. Sandi is always very friendly and loves to give us feedback on the workouts, but when the clock starts she is always ready to roll. We are thankful to Sandi for her support over the last 10 years and feel so proud that we have been able to make CFA her home away from home. Keep up the great work!
