What do you do when you’re not at CFA?
Enjoying life to fullest. Like to travel with my wife. Being with my 2 yo chocolate lab.
What led you to Crossfit and CFA specifically?
To get back in shape. But I wanted to try something different this time. Been to gyms and YMCA before. All good, but ultimately stop going for some reason. CrossFit just look different when I found it online looking for a personal trainer. Found CFA via google. Looking like what I thought I needed. Called and made appointment with Kate.
When did you realize that CrossFit is right for you?
After my first week I knew it was tougher than anything I have done in the past. I was hooked. It took me about 6 months to get comfortable working out again. Recovering from surgery on my legs ( 1 on left and 2 on the right) made my first 9 months hard for me. The coaches help me tremendously with scaling the workouts to fit what I needed then. Today I think I’m doing great. 55 lbs of weight lost and feeling healthy.
What movement do you despise over everything and why?
I still struggle with some of the movements for proper form. Anything on my knees is hard for me but I’m getting better each time. Of course , running still is awful.
What has been your all-time favorite moment at CFA?
About 5 months ago being able to do “Todays workout” with no scaling. From 50 burpees or whatever is on the board. I can do it, just might be as fast as some.
What motivates you during a tough workout?
Knowing I’m going to be a grandpa for first time come August. Pushing myself to be fit and healthy as possible to watch Drew Elizabeth be born and growing into adulthood.
If you could write your own workout for a day, what would it be?
Maybe some more bicep and tricep workouts.
Here’s one Coach Josh wrote for Randy:
“The Randy”: 400m run, 100 Banded Curls, 400m run, 50 Push-ups, 400m run,100 Banded Tricep Push Downs, 400m Run.
What are your goals going forward and what do you think will help you achieve them?
I want to lose another 30 lbs. Keep getting more flexibility and improving on my cardiovascular.
What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health, and fitness or just day to day life since starting CrossFit?
Clothing sizes that have change. Improve flexibility and a lot less joint stiffness and pain.
What would you recommend to someone who is just starting out with CrossFit?
Try it and give a positive workout. Talk to the coaches when you need questions answered. Stick with it. It’s hard but worth it.
If you could have one skill or characteristic of another member at CFA what and from whom would it be? Or which other CFA member are you the most motivated by?
Kris Shyne and Bobby (last month MOM). Kris for positive attitude and always willing to give you time to chat. Bobby. His advice about “ not letting the old man in” motivates me still. I cannot say enough about the overall positive vibe our gym puts off. The coaches and fellow gym members are always willing to answer and help out. That is special and not always found in other gyms I have been to. Still the best thing about CrossFit for me is. Workouts on the board. No planning or thinking of what should I do today. Right there it is. Give it your best shot.

Coach’s comment:
We are so thankful that Randy came into our gym in the fall of 2022. Since then he has dropped over 50 pounds, increased his overall wellness and became a staple of our community. Randy is always down for a challenging workout and to push it as best as he can. When he started he was coming off a knee injury from skiing and since then his mobility and range of motion with his knee has been impressive. Throughout the start of 2024 his recent consistency and dedication really made him stand out as this month’s member of the month. Keep up the good work Randy, we know that you will!
